Homemade Granola by Georgia O’Keeffe

This is Georgia O’Keefe’s original granola recipe. I got it from “A Painter’s Kitchen” – Recipes from the Kitchen of Georgia O’Keeffe. I got the cookbook while on vacation in Santa Fe quite a few years ago. I think this is the only recipe I’ve ever made out of the book.
It’s just delicious and oh so healthy….in small quantities : ))
Granola by Georgia O’Keeffe
1 1/2 cups sunflower seeds
2 cups coursely chopped or slivered almonds with skins
2 cups walnuts coarsely chopped
1 cup cashews coarsely chopped
1 cup raw sesame seeds
1 cup raw wheat germ
6 cups rolled oats (I just use plain Quaker Oats)
1 cup honey
1 cup safflower oil
2 cups raisins (optional)
2 cups chopped dates (optional)
Cream or milk to taste
sliced fruit (optional)
Measure the dry ingredients into a very large bowl and stir to mix. Slowly heat the honey and oil until it’s smooth and runny. Pour the warm liquid over the dry ingredients and stir well to combine them thoroughly.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spread the cereal on 2 oiled cookie sheets and place them in the oven. Turn the granola at frequent intervals so that it is lightly browned on all sides. Cool the granola to room temperature, then store in airtight containers. Serve with cream or milk and sliced fresh fruit, it desired. Makes approximately 4 quarts of granola.
DELICIOUS!!!
